The fourth release of the Owls Series is dedicated to the Australian Masked Owl. The motive of the 99.9% silver coin depicts an ornamented Australian masked owl in flight. The majestic bird is surrounded by ornate ornaments and the inscriptions “OWLS” and “AUSTRALIAN MASKED OWL”.
The Australian masked owl (Tyto novaehollandiae) is a species of barn owl and is found on the islands of Australia, Tasmania and Melanesia. Compared to its conspecifics (Tyto alba), the masked owl has a very strong bill and feet with extended talons. The masked owl is divided into three subspecies: the Masked Barn Owl, the Celebes Masked Barn Owl, and the Tasmanian Masked Barn Owl and can reach a body size of up to 47 cm depending on the subspecies.
The reverse features the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II along with the tuluma, the national symbol of Tokelau. The tuluma is a wooden fishing box used by the fisherman of Tokelau.
