DINOSAURS: BRONTOSAURUS 2021 Niue 1oz silver coin
The beloved Brontosaurus features on the latest release from The New Zealand Mint’s Dinosaur collection. One of the most recognised of dinosaurs, this giant was in fact a harmless herbivore.
Brontosaurus was a large, long necked, quadrupedal animal with a long, whip-like, tai, and fore limbs that were slightly shorter than its hind limbs. The largest species weighed up to 15 tonnes and measured up to 22 metres long from head to tail.
The name Brontosaurus comes from Greek words ‘bronte’ meaning thunder and ‘saurus’ meaning lizard. Computer modelling of the dinosaurs tail suggested that it was capable of producing a whip-like cracking sound of over 200 decibels, comparable to the volume of a cannon – or even perhaps thunder.
The reverse of this pure silver coin shows the Brontosaurus, head held high, in full colour against an engraved prehistoric landscape.
