HYGIEIA 2020 Samoa 155g piedfort antiqued copper coin: Hygieia was imported by the Romans as the goddess Valetudo, the goddess of personal health, but in time she started to be increasingly identified with the ancient Italian goddess of social welfare, Salus. In classical sculpture she was represented as a woman holding a large serpent in her arms. In 2020 the world in facing the COVID-19 pandemic. We all hope the goddess of health and her serpent (the enduring symbol Western medicine) can protect everyone’s health.

The reverse portrays the classical image of Hygieia with a large serpent in her arms.
Obverse
The obverse carries the Ian Rank Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on it, and is issued under the authority of Samoa.
