Description

Mythical Creatures – Griffin

The earliest mention of griffins – hybrids of eagles and lions – dates back to the third millennium BC and comes from Mesopotamia. These noble beings served symbolically as guardians of the city gates. Legend says that if the griffin settles once, no one can drive it out. Therefore it has become the embodiment of tenacity, immunity, perseverance, and determination to defend its home. Also in Christian mythology, the griffin is a guardian, however, it guards divine power instead of treasures and possessions. Its avian and mammalian features express the dual nature of Jesus Christ – divine and human – and it is also a symbol of the resurrection.

Reverse

The reverse side of the coin was processeed by medal maker Mária Filová, DiS. It presents a griffin with an eagle’s head, neck, wings and claws and a lion’s torso, hind legs and tail. The depiction of the creature is supplemented with an English inscription GRIFFIN. The coin does not have a classic coin frame, however, the relief is surrounded by decorative ornaments that permeate the entire collector´s cycle.

Obverse

As the coins of the Czech Mint are published with the foreign license of the island of Niue, their obverse side bears the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the nominal value of 2 DOLLARS (NZD) and the year of issue 2020.
