THE LEGEND OF KING ARTHUR SET 2021 Niue 4x 1oz proof silver coin & collector’s tin

Two legendary blades, which are often confused, are associated with Arthur’s fate. The first is known as the sword in the stone. Legend says that this weapon was struck in a rock, from which, only the true heir to the throne could free it according to the prophecy of the wizard Merlin. A series of noble lords tried in vain, however, the simple squire Arthur, who had no idea of his noble origins, succeeded. When King Arthur broke his sword in battle with King Pellinor, Merlin led him to the Lady of the Lake. This fairy gave Arthur a new sword, which provided his owner with extraordinary power – he made him an invincible warrior and an indisputable king of all the British. A miraculous blade called Excalibur served Arthur faithfully for a long time and helped him to overthrow his fateful sock Mordred in the battle of Camlann. However, the king himself was mortally wounded, and since no one else was worthy of holding his legendary weapon, it was returned to the lake.

Reverse

  1. KING ARTHUR – MORDRED: Arthur’s fateful battle with Mordred – two horse riders are pierced by their weapons. The royal throne and two warring armies in the background depict a cross which, in combination with the circular circumference of the coin, refers to the Celtic-Christian origin of the legend. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with the English inscription of KING ARTHUR – MORDRED.
  2. EXCALIBUR – LADY OF THE LAKE: The Lake Lady, who emerges from the water and passes Excalibur to Arthur on the reverse side. Following the previous coin of the cycle, a cross is drawn in the background, which in combination with the circular circumference of the coin refers to the Celtic-Christian origin of the legend. The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with the English inscription EXCALIBUR – LADY OF THE LAKE.
  3. LANCELOT – GUINEVERE: Lancelot and Ginevra in each other’s arms – on horseback, they ride away from Maleagant’s castle, which looms behind them. Following the previous coins of the cycle, the background depicts a cross, which in combination with the circular circumference of the coin refers to the Celtic-Christian origin of the legend (it is the so-called Celtic cross). The composition of the reverse side is supplemented with the English inscription LANCELOT – GUINEVERE
  4. MERLIN – DRAGONS: Merlin at the time of his greatest glory on the reverse side. A dignified man with a beard wields a magic staff, while two dragons symbolizing the conflict between the Celts and the Saxons fight behind him in the background. Following the previous coin of the cycle, a cross is indicated in the background, which, combined with the circular circumference of the coin, refers to the Celtic-Christian origins of the legend. The composition of the reverse side is completed by the English inscription MERLIN – DRAGONS.
